Created April 26, 1853, from parts of Los Angeles County, and named after the city, which had been founded as a Mormon colony in 1850. The name of Saint Bernardino, a great Franciscan preacher of the fifteenth Century, was first applied by Padre Dumetz from the Mission San Gabriel to a temporary chapel on May 20, 1810, the feast day of the Saint.
