Markup Data Dictionary (mudd)

What is mudd XML?

Counting California uses the U.S. Census Bureau's data dictionary for processing of all U.S. Census studies.  To make the "Table (Matrix) Section" of the data dictionary easier to manage, we mark up the data dictionary with XML tags, and that's where the name mudd XML came from.  The mudd XML only has tags for the data fields that are found in the data dictionary.  All mudd tags can be identified by the attribute source="producer".

It should be noted that since completing the original markup of the U.S. Census Bureau's data dictionary, the metadata from other studies has also been marked up.  The mudd XML from these studies was not derived from a data dictionary and, therefore, may not have all of the same data fields.

What is momudd XML?

Looking at the mudd XML, it was discovered that it didn't contain all the data fields that are required for our processing.  The next logical step was to use the mudd XML as a foundation to build more than just mudd XML.  This became the momudd XML.  In addition to the mudd tags, momudd XML has data fields for concepts, unit of measurement, and variables.  All tags added to the mudd XML to create the momudd XML are identified with the attribute source="cdl".

The concepts were added using the U.S. Census data dictionary subject locator section, which was then manually scanned for accuracy.  The assigned concepts were taken from the set of existing concepts in Counting California, not from the set of concepts used by the U.S. Census Bureau.  Therefore, if a person were to use the concepts in Counting California's momudd XML, it would be at the his/her own risk.

The unit of measurement is assigned based on the U.S. Census general identification of table ids.  The rules for making the assignments are:  any table, the id of which starts with 'P', will be assigned 'individual' as the unit of measurement, and any table, the id of which starts with 'H', will be assigned 'housing unit' as the unit of measurement.  The final step in this process involves manual review of each table, with changes made as needed.

Counting California uses a very simple method for the generation of the section of the table tagged with '<variables>'.  Because of its simplicity, it sometimes produces incorrect results.  Our algorithm splits the table's title any time it encounters the word "BY".  The algorithm gathers all the sections produced by the splitting, and puts each one in the '<variables>' section.  An example title, for which the algorithm produces correct results, is "SEX BY AGE".  In this case, there are two '<variables>' tags, SEX and AGE.  We understand that a high percentage of the '<variables>' values are incorrect, but this is the first step toward the DDI.

Studies with mudd, momudd XML

The following studies have mudd and/or momudd XML.  We will add more here as we produce them.  The mudd/momudd XML can be downloaded or viewed via a browser.
